Gaasbeek, Belgium

At the end of September, set outside Brussels, an oasis of tranquillity and relaxation in a beautiful forest at Gaasbeek Castle. My toddler was very happy for all the puddles he found in the forest (luckily, he had rubber boots)

Château de Jehay, Belgium

The domain and its history

united_kingdomChâteau de Jehay is recognizable among all others thanks to its famous checker-board cladding, made up of thick white chalk stone bonders alternating with brown sandstone rubble stones.

romania_flagDomeniul si istoria sa: Castelul Jehay se diferentiaza de alte castele datorita aspectului exterior de “tabla de sah“, datorita amestecului de piatra alba cu piatra bej.

Wherever the wind takes you

united_kingdomLinked to the château by a five-arched bridge, the Italian-style gardens extend as far as the eye can see. A stroll amongst the remarkable trees is a pure pleasure. Allow yourself to be guided by the murmur of the wind in the leaves.

There are more castles in Belgium!

Here is a list of the castles in Belgium that I have seen so far. You will surely like them!

Seneffe Castle, Belgium

It became a habit that every weekend I go discover Belgium’s marvels: palaces, castles or ruins. Now, in autumn, it’s even more beautiful!

Seneffe castle was my choice for this beautiful late October and it was amazing! The garden was quiet at sunset and the warm weather made it perfect to relax and enjoy the fresh air.

The access to the park and gardens is free and for the Castle/Museum is 5 euros for adults.

After visiting the castle’s park, I went in the town of Seneffe and discovered a beautiful brick church and many children dressed for Halloween, running around and hiding, playing some sort of game and trowing balls at each other. It was a perfect Saturday afternoon!

The Lavaux-Sainte-Anne Castle, Belgium

The  Lavaux-Sainte-Anne Castle (Château de Lavaux-Sainte-Anne), located in Belgium, was erected around 1450 and it has a moat, a drawbridge and massive round towers. Later, around the year 1630, the Baron Jacques Reynard de Rouveroy adapted the castle to the fashion of that time by adding a beautiful roofs to the towers, remodeled the interior and the inner courtyard.

Today, the rooms of the castle are large and simple, with medieval furniture, large fireplaces and wooden floors that squeak under your steps.

The castle is like a museum of hunt and some rooms display mounted animals.

Practical information:

  • opened from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm (5 pm from 1st of Nov till 1st of April)
  • Last ticket is sold 1h15min before the closing time
  • Adress: Rue du Chateau, 8, 5580 Lavaux-Sainte-Anne. It’s easy to get there by car from Brussels, but more difficult by public transport.

The blue sky that I was hoping for, was covered in clouds that shed a few tears, but I am used to Belgian weathers, so I will not complain any further 😉

Modave Castle, Belgium

In Belgium there are many castles.

This post is about Modave Castle, located in Liege Province in Belgium.

The Modave Castle was built in middle ages, but was partly demolished and then restored in the 17th century, giving it the facade of today. The oldest part of the castle (the donjonthe keep), is built at 60 meters above the Hoyoux River valley. The terrace of the castle offers a magnificent view of the nature surrounding the valley.

The rooms of the castle are richly decorated, with remarkable ceilings, beautiful paintings and sculptures, furniture and tapestries dating from the 18th century.

La Hulpe Castle, Belgium

united_kingdomThe beautiful “La Hulpe Castle” is located in the south of Brussels, Belgium, at approximate 20 minutes drive from Brussels. The castle is situated on the Domaine Solvay: a huge park with lakes, ducks and green spaces that go deep into the Sonian Fores (Foret de Soignes).

The park around the castle is very big, therefore you can easily find a corner just for you to relax on a blanket or read a book.

A big parking lot is conveniently located next to the entrance.

The following photos were taken during all seasons, as I enjoy going to La Hulpe as often as I can. It’s one of the best places near Brussels, perfect to escape the city. 🙂

Castle of Veves

united_kingdomWhat a lovely way to spend an warm autumn Sunday visiting this fairy tale castle: the Castle of Veves. Maybe Cinderella lived here? It surely looks like it 😉

Veves Castle (“Chateau de Veves” in French) dates back from the 15th century and it has 6 towers. The landscape around the castle is quiet and beautiful and it’s located near the village Celles.

You can visit the Castle of Veves from 1st of April till 4th of November, from 10:00 to 17:00 (closed on Monday and Friday, opened on Public Holidays)

Imi imaginez balul Cenuseresei cand si-a pierdut pantoful.

E deschis din 1 Aprilie pana pe 4 Noiembrie, de la 10:00-17:00. Inchis Luni si Vineri. Deschis de sarbatorile legale.

Village of Celles

After visiting the Veves Castle, we went to the nearby village, Celles. What a fantastic idea that was!

The village of Celles has a few stone houses decorated with flowers and other ornaments, a lovely restaurant and many cows and sheep on the surrounding fields.

The fresh air and quietness make you feel an overwhelming happiness that only a place like this can offer, away from the crowds and pollution of big cities. I hardly left the place, with a promise that I will, one day, go back.

Beloeil Castle, Belgium

Beloeil Castle (“Château de Belœil” in French) in Belgium, is located at 1 hour drive from Brussels. Château de Belœil is one of the most beautiful Castles in Belgium and dates back from the 14th century and is surrounded by a beautiful Baroque garden. Beloeil Castle and its gardens can be visited only during some months of the year (see below the practical info).

When I went to Belœil Castle in Belgium there weren’t many visitors, which was perfect: quiet and peaceful!

The alleys of the park surrounding the Château de Belœil were quite muddy to walk on. Luckily during weekends every 20 minutes there is a Choo Choo Train that drives around for the tour of the gardens.
